The morning of departure

Upon arriving at Narita Airport, we picked up three cardboard boxes of souvenirs prepared for the factory workers and headed to the check-in counter.
The very quiet scenery made me keenly aware that the coronavirus pandemic was still ongoing.
Previously, there were direct flights to Da Nang, but now it takes about 12 hours to travel to Da Nang via Ho Chi Minh Airport.
We made our connecting flight smoothly without any trouble and arrived in Da Nang, where we were reunited with Mr. Vu, the factory manager, and had a meal before ending the day.

The morning of reunion

We left the hotel just after 6am local time and headed to the factory.
This is to join in on environmental improvement activities that begin at 7am every morning at the factory.
This is a very important job that he has been doing every morning since December 2013.
It takes about 25 minutes from the hotel to reach the factory.
I set foot on this place for the first time in 898 days, surrounded by the motorbikes of staff members going to work.
I had been waiting for this moment for so long, and when I got out of the car I saw many familiar faces and they called out to me, "Ah! Mr. Takei!"

Environmental Improvement

We head towards the cafeteria to work together to improve the environment.We asked Suzuki Ryota to polish the dining room table.
Rather than simply cleaning, we will have you immersed in thoroughly removing unnecessary dirt, even in places that cannot be seen.
With the increase in remote work and the Tsukiji office being renovated, there are fewer opportunities to improve the environment, but by having the participants polish the tables for two days, I think they were able to understand the true meaning of "improving the environment is about polishing the mind."

A conversation with President Quan

We have conducted online business negotiations using ZOOM in the past, but it was still very refreshing to meet in person and have a conversation while hearing real voices.We were also told about the company's history and President Quan's thoughts on the appeal of Oka Foods, and felt that this was a very meaningful training session for new employees.
I felt that the small gestures and casual conversations were a unique experience that cannot be experienced online.

Factory site inspection

When I entered the site, everyone was smiling.They greet me with "Xin chào!"
There were many faces I was seeing for the first time, but there were also many old members who were still there, so it was a happy time to see familiar faces up close.
The work is as meticulous as ever, and newcomer Suzuki Ryota also gets to experience the process by actually touching the fish and learning how to process them.
I think I really felt that products are provided through the accumulation of each and every single piece of steady work.

Give a gift

Since it had been a while since our last visit, we decided to prepare souvenirs for all the staff.We brought 420 sets of six different types of sweets from Japan, and with the help of the factory office staff, we wrapped and prepared them.
The gifts were handed out to everyone over a period of about three hours during lunchtime on Saturday.
From purchasing and shipping in Japan, to wrapping and delivering the gifts, I felt that the whole process was exciting and enjoyable, with only one thing in mind: making everyone happy.

Social gatherings and birthday parties

Coincidentally, the second day of our visit, August 6th, was Takei's birthday, and the following day, the 7th, was his manager Vu's birthday, so they planned a joint birthday party for us.We were given gorgeous bouquets and lots of cakes, and we had a mini party at lunchtime, and then a social gathering in the evening where we all drank and sang and had a great time.
I am truly grateful that everyone treated me like family and took the time to prepare and celebrate with me.
Suzuki Ryota, who also participated, was warmly welcomed by everyone and was deeply moved when it was time to say goodbye and return home.

After the business trip

Looking back after my first business trip in two and a half years.The once bustling tourist town of Da Nang has undergone great changes. However, the people at Quang Hyu Foods have remained unchanged throughout this time, working silently and diligently to improve the environment and promote production activities, and I felt a surge of gratitude for this. I had been concerned that not being able to visit would cause things to regress or be lost, but the activities and spirit they had built up have taken root and are on the verge of becoming a part of their culture.
Next year will mark the 10th anniversary of the company's founding, and I am truly amazed and grateful to see that the factory and the hearts of the people who work there continue to be refined. There was a sense of excitement there that cannot be experienced online.
We hope that many more customers and users will come to Vietnam in the future and experience this excitement for themselves.
