The origins of carp streamers

text

Carp streamers became popular among the common people during the Edo period. Hiroshige Ando's ukiyo-e paintings also depict carp streamers, but each household only had a single black carp floating in the air, and at the time the carp streamers were made from washi paper. In the Meiji period, washi paper was replaced by cotton, and red carp also began to fly in the air. In the Showa period, carp streamers began to be made from nylon, and many colorful carp of different sizes began to fly in the air.

However, the situation surrounding carp streamers has become very difficult recently.

In urban areas, there are rows of high-rise apartment buildings, and it is natural that carp streamers are often prohibited from being placed on balconies because they are dangerous if they fly away or fall.

In some areas, carp streamers have been banned in some school districts because they cause children to argue over the size of the carp streamers.

Carp streamers are a Japanese culture created by our ancestors, but it is becoming increasingly difficult to pass on this culture.

Therefore, we hope that nursery and kindergarten classrooms will be decorated with lots of cute, colorful carp streamers made by the children.

"Carp streamers" and "rockfish"

text

When you think of carp streamers, you think of their large eyes. The rockfish we'll be introducing this month also has distinctive eyes. Because of their large, protruding eyes, they are written as "eye-bari" and apparently that's how they got the name "mebaru."

It is also written as "Meharu" or "Haru Tsuge Uo" and is a recommended fish that is in season as the cold winter ends and the weather gradually gets warmer.

There are many types of rockfish, and the three species caught in the waters off Japan - red rockfish, black rockfish, and white rockfish - were once collectively called "mebaru" (rockfish).

In 2008, they were reassessed as separate species and are now called "red rockfish," "black rockfish," and "white rockfish."

Rockfish is a translucent white fish that does not harden even when heated, so it can be enjoyed boiled, grilled, or fried.
