April is the season when cherry blossoms bloom and new children start school. This is also the time when those in charge of preparing school lunches and homeroom teachers must check the health of each new child and whether they have any allergies.

Allergy-causing foods
text
Recently, we have seen a big change in the foods that cause allergies across all age groups. In 2017, the most common allergy-causing foods were eggs, milk, wheat, and nuts. However, there has been a change in the allergy to nuts, which was previously in fourth place.
In 2014, the rate of cases involving "tree nuts" was 3.6%, but six years later in 2020, it increased 3.7 times to 13.5%. As a result, the rankings of foods causing allergies in 2022 will change to "tree nuts" in third place and "wheat" in fourth place, indicating a significant increase in "tree nut" allergies.

There are many different types of nuts, but the ones that are most likely to cause allergies are walnuts (56.7%), cashews (21.3%), macadamia nuts (5.5%), and almonds (4.2%), with allergic symptoms occurring in allergic individuals.
The proportion of "walnuts" is very high, so when interviewing children with "tree nut" allergies, it is necessary to ask in detail about the types of nuts. The seven specific ingredients are eggs, beef, wheat, buckwheat, peanuts, shrimp, and crab, and the rate of increase is so high that walnuts may be included in the future. It is also important to check the ingredient list on the package when cooking.
Now, what about the "fish" allergy that we always talk about? Fish is a low allergy rate, ranking 9th at 1.9% of all allergies. The 21 items that are equivalent to specific allergens include salmon and mackerel, but excluding children who cannot eat all types, there are many types of fish, so by stocking alternative fish fillets in the freezer, children with allergies can still eat fish in their school lunches.
