Sanma is such a typical autumn delicacy that every year from September to October, "Sanma Festivals" are held in Nemuro, Onagawa, Kesennuma, and even Meguro in Tokyo, where people eat freshly caught sanma.

Salmon return to the rivers where they were born and raised to spawn in Hokkaido and off the coast of Sanriku from early September to December. These salmon are called "autumn salmon" and are also known as "autumn flavor." Like saury, they have long been a beloved seasonal feature of this time of year.
